Responsibilities

The Automation Controls Manager is responsible for: 

 

  • Ensure the safe implementation and operation of motion control equipment being sold or rented.
  • Establish and maintain the production schedule as it relates to the prepping of equipment being sent into the field, the availability of returning kit, and the necessity to interface to project management, engineering, and the floor. 
  • Manage automation shop personnel required to prep a show.
  • Identify load and test criteria and subsequently confirm compliance.
  • Establish available SCS kit required to configure a given show. Address concerns in the effect’s list and configure software components.
  • Identify/Coordinate show specific hardware, for example, cable chains, I/O boxes, commutators, cable reels, power distribution, interlocks. Production schedules and available personnel may result in this function being inclusive of the fabrication phase.
  • Team out/in show equipment (Asset Management).
  • Coordinate/Integrate control kit within the constraints of the machines or scenic elements.
  • Interface with Automation software development team to test, improve, and develop our product capabilities.
  • Provide initial show support post load-out (in coordination with Integrators).
  • Provide show specific operator training (in coordination with Integrators).
  • Backup and archive show related files, pull, and test spares.
  • Address minor electrical updates and modifications.
  • Function in the capacity as an Automation resource for permanent installation shows.
  • Overnight travel is possible but the roles required result in this position being predominantly addressed at our New Windsor location. Trips to the city would be a reasonable expectation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: 

  • Knowledge of setting up, testing, troubleshooting, installing, programming, and running Live Events Automated Control systems.
  • The ability to solder, crimp, and terminate electrical wires.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Excellent presentation skills and ability to deliver technical training, including to non-technicians.
  • Knowledge of integrated data networking

Physical demands: 

  • Physically capable of lifting and coiling cable as well as lifting and placing industrial control components.
  • Must be able to work overtime and weekends with limited notice.

Travel required: 

  • Varies but can be extensive at times. Up to 26 weeks per year
  • Must be able to travel to both domestic and international venues.

Preferred education and experience: 

  • 2+ years prior working experience of industrial automation control systems and/or automated systems in the live events industry
  • 1-2+ years of experience in a supervisory role
  • Knowledge and experience of theatre production required.
  • Experience delivering technical training.
  • Project management experience is a plus.
  • Bachelors degree in theatrical design technology is a plus

Compensation:

The pay range for this position is estimated to be $90,000-$120,000. Actual salary to be determined by the experience, knowledge, skills and abilities of the applicant combined with location and alignment with market data.
